I have to admit that I like folding phones, and the reason is very simple: I like small phones that I can carry in my shirt pocket.
Until a few years ago, there were some mobile models on the market that were small (Xperia Compact type), but I admit that today there aren’t not many of these types of mobiles. And for quite some time, unfortunately for me, mobiles are getting bigger and bigger, until they exceed 6 inches of screen.
Fortunately, some models have appeared, such as the Samsung Flip Z3, which offer new possibilities for those who like "compact" mobiles, as is my case. The problem is that they are still very expensive and their reliability has yet to be proven.
According to data from market analysts, this type of mobile barely represents 0.6% of the market in 2021, and with the appearance of new models from other brands, it is expected that they will reach just over 3% in the year 2025.
Being foldable they have more moving parts and therefore more chances of failures occurring and having to be repaired; and its repair is also more expensive.
Due to manufacturing problems and the small quantity that are still sold, their prices are expensive, since manufacturers position them at the top of the market, in order to be able to obtain profits by selling smaller quantities.
Presumably, over time some of its most critical components (such as the folding screen) will become cheaper, and manufacturers will be encouraged to make models for the intermediate zone of the market.
There are those who say that if Apple begins to offer this type of model, sales would increase significantly, since Apple is capable of changing trends in the mobile market.
I’m not sure, but I have the impression that I will continue to use my current "small" mobile for many years. And the truth is that I don't need more than what I have now.
