Will with what is happening in the Ukraine make Europe change?

After more than a week of seeing the barbarity that is happening in Ukraine, it makes me think about the future of Europe, or rather of what is today the European Community, which unfortunately no longer has England among its members by their decision.

The European idea of having a common economic and political space has been a great success that has brought the longest period of peace and prosperity to the Continent, and to maintain something you have to be willing to work hard for it. And we Europeans are becoming more comfortable and older every day.

What is happening in Ukraine is a shame for Russia, because it has been the country that has attacked, but I think there are very few "innocents". The only innocents are the poor people who are dying because of the war, and many other workers who will suffer economic problems as collateral damage of the conflict.

It is not at all innocent to try to enlarge NATO by proposing that Ukraine be incorporated to encircle Russia a little more.

When a conflict occurs, such as when a murder occurs, the key question is: who has benefited from that act?

Of course not Ukraine, which suffers from the war on its territory and its people die. Neither does Russia, because even if it wins the military war, it has lost the economic and influence war on a global level. And Europe also loses by having a human and economic drama on its borders

China wins, to which Russia has to turn to partially overcome its economic and supply problems. And above all, the USA wins, without lifting a finger they find themselves with a much weaker opponent.

This war comes after the "scare" of Covid-19 and the logistical problem that it brought with it, when we found that the "cheap" products that we bought in Asia were no longer received. Demonstrating that on many occasions the cheap can be expensive, and that cooperation is good, but not absolute dependence.

In the last tens of years, Europe has lost a large part of its industrial infrastructure and if it is smart it should recover part of it.

And now it is time to urgently address the problem of fossil fuels. Europe finds that it depends on Russia for gas and oil, but on the other hand we must put them aside as soon as possible to face the great challenge of climate change.

Voices have recently emerged calling for accelerating the technological transition of our power generation. Better late than never, and we hope that this time it will be serious and the effort will continue in the coming years.

Most of us are very clear that from confrontations and wars produce only misery and suffering. And we are seeing it in Ukraine palpably.

Will our leaders have the intelligence and long-sightedness to achieve peace and establish collaboration mechanisms between all the parties with a view to the future?

Or are those who propose that we arm ourselves more and better going to win? If so, it would be very regrettable and we will all pay the price.
