In the aeronautical world, all kinds of systems are being studied and tested to allow aircrafts to fly in a non-polluting manner. The most complex case is that of medium and large aircraft, since due to their large size and weight they need fuels capable of generating a lot of energy to lift them off the ground.

There are several companies that offer the possibility of using hydrogen as fuel, and then some cells to generate electricity capable of driving electric motors. The less the aircraft weighs, the easier it is to achieve.

I have seen an American company called HyPoint that offers this possibility to planes of up to 50 passengers (they are medium type). It has teamed up with another company that manufactures the hydrogen tank out of carbon composite material with very little weight and enough volume to be able to store more fuel (hydrogen).

It offers information on its website  www.hypoint.com   where it announces an energy of more than 1,000 W/Kg of hydrogen, and a simple refrigeration system for hydrogen. The photo below shows a fuel tank that is light in weight (12 Kgs.) and can be handled by one person.

The analyzes to put the system on the market have been carried out based on a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q300 aircraft, which is a bi-turbo propeller aircraft with more than 40 years on the market, and capable of transporting 50 passengers. You can see it in the next photo

With the analyzes that they have presented, in theory the plane with its passengers could travel more than 2,000 km, which is a much greater distance than that necessary for the flights carried out by these planes.

I think this is a smart decision, because if they show that they can “upgrade an old plane” for passengers, it will open many doors for them to upgrade and motorize many other planes.

Hopefully reality will show that the project is viable, and another step will be taken to achieve non-polluting flights. I wish them the best.
