Every day we hear and read that the root cause of the Climate Emergency that we suffer is due to the economic system that we follow. It is a system based on the growth without limits of the environment. To make products, we destroy whatever is necessary in order to obtain those products, in order to make a profit through them.

And our way of living is in accordance with the economic system in which we live. It should not be enough for us to blame anyone, because blaming the "system" is useless, because we are inside it. And for a long time this system has served to achieve significant growth in people's standard of living, and we were all very happy, but in recent years we have come to "consume" much more than what our Nature is capable of providing us.

And that destruction breaks the natural balance that sustains us, and therefore we find ourselves with the Climate Emergency problems that we see today all over the world. I prefer to call it Emergency, because it is (or should be) something very urgent to resolve, although unfortunately many people still don't see it that way. And most of those who see it, do not seem determined to change their comfortable way of living, and go on to do it in a more sustainable way.

Because let's not fool ourselves, we are all selfish (and I am the first) when it comes to defending our privileges. Nobody wants to live "worse", and perhaps what needs to be explained is that it is not about living worse, but about living "differently". And with other priorities.

****

Because I think we can live "well" by living a little differently. Having fewer "things" and that these last longer, being less consumerist, avoiding waste and the consumption of fossil fuels without a real need for it,

Today (according to some experts) we consume each year 1.8 times what our planet is capable of generating, and logically our planet is degenerating. And since it has been degenerating for many years, hence the loss of natural balance and the increase in temperatures, and all the negative consequences that this entails.

Growth as the ultimate and sole objective makes no sense. Our growth (that is, our consumption) should be limited to what our Nature is capable of giving us. And no more. Because the “system” cannot give it. And as a Castilian proverb says: what cannot be, cannot be, and it is also impossible.

There are many people making reasonable proposals as to how the situation could be changed, and I am convinced that it is possible. But there are also many short-term interests and egoisms that are interested in continuing down this meaningless path. And the latter are very powerful in means and money, and so far they have managed to keep us fooled and happy.

I have read some reflections by  Herman Daly , an American economist from the University of Maryland   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Daly    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Daly who makes some very interesting contributions, and there are many others with good and reasonable ideas. But who pays attention to them?

I don't have a crystal ball to see the future, but I'm not very optimistic about it. I don't know if it's because I'm already into years, or because I try to inform myself and think on my own.

And what do you think? And most importantly, what do you do?
