A silent race is being waged beneath the ocean's surface. And its protagonist isn't a giant submarine or a warship, but something much smaller: the underwater drone.

Humans have one obvious problem when operating underwater: we need to breathe. A manned submarine carries that limitation with it wherever it goes. An underwater drone doesn't. It can submerge for weeks or months without anyone on board needing oxygen, food, or rest.

That seemingly simple difference changes almost everything. Because they are small, stealthy, and increasingly intelligent devices. Compared to a conventional submarine, an underwater drone is tiny. And at sea, size matters: the smaller it is, the harder it is to detect by sonar or radar.

It has no crew, so it doesn't need life support systems, bunks, or a kitchen. All that space and weight is dedicated to sensors, batteries, and mission equipment. Their "eyes" and "ears" are increasingly precise acoustic, optical, and magnetic sensors. And artificial intelligence adds real autonomy: they can decide routes, avoid obstacles, and react to stimuli without constantly relying on human commands. With this, they can monitor maritime zones, collect oceanographic data, support naval operations, and, if the mission requires it, carry out attack tasks.

They can remain at sea for months without raising suspicion. One of their greatest assets is their discretion. An underwater drone can stay submerged for months without the need to deploy a large vessel that would alert other actors. No smoke, no telltale radio frequencies, no movements visible from satellites.

This is not science fiction: concrete examples already exist. France has just incorporated the Narval, capable of exploring the seabed to depths of up to 6,000 meters with high-resolution sensors. Germany has developed the Ranger, a drone that can be launched from torpedo tubes and surface autonomously. And a hydrogen-powered prototype, the Envoy AUV, has far exceeded autonomy expectations in recent tests, a sign that the energy problem is beginning to be resolved. In general, all countries are introducing their own versions of underwater drones.

Silent guardians even in times of peace. Their usefulness is not limited to conflict scenarios. These drones protect critical infrastructure: underwater communication cables, pipelines, oil platforms, and marine energy parks. They also continuously monitor coastlines, something that would be extremely expensive with manned vessels.

Navies around the world are already combining their traditional fleets with swarms of drones for surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational support tasks, multiplying capabilities without increasing the budget.

But it's not all advantages, and there are still challenges to overcome. Energy autonomy remains a challenge for missions lasting several months, although advances such as hydrogen propulsion point in the right direction.

Underwater communication also presents a real challenge: transmitting large volumes of data quickly remains far more difficult than in the air. Added to this is the risk of interference or hacking attempts.

Even with these challenges, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. That's why its development is progressing at breakneck speed, even though the news reaching the general public remains scarce and fragmented.

What happens beneath the surface of the sea is barely visible. But there, in silence, modern naval history is already changing thanks to these autonomous, stealthy, and increasingly intelligent devices.
