By now, everyone is very clear that the electrification we are facing needs to greatly multiply the use of batteries, and that this increase is going to cause problems in the materials used today to manufacture batteries.

Today the standard batteries are lithium-ion, which is made up of almost 30% graphite. China controls more than 80% of the supply of graphite and is obtained from fossil fuels.

It is therefore very important to find alternatives to graphite, and that is what the company Stora Enso proposes, which has presented a material called "lignode", which is obtained from lignin present in trees.

In a battery, during charge (the electrons) are stored in the anode (which is made up of graphite), and when it is discharged these electrons go to the cathode, and from there they feed the electronic device in question.

The lignode works like graphite, but better. It can store the electrons more easily, so the battery could be charged more quickly. And that is a very important feature.

You can see a very clarifying video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_M2FYEe2t8

If batteries of this type were possible, and I hope they are, lignode would be obtained from trees, since trees are made up of almost 40% lignin. And a sustainable material would be provided to these batteries.

As I said at the beginning, batteries are a fundamental component for the electrification that we need, and that is why many people are researching new materials that make them more sustainable, cheaper, and easier to manufacture and recycle.

With so much work being done, new possibilities will continue to appear, but we must be aware that we do not have time. We are fighting against the interests of many companies, and our rulers are not giving the stature to achieve the results that are needed.

I'd love to be optimistic, but the data I'm getting isn't going in that direction. Which should not be an obstacle to continue trying to change things.
