We can say that at present the "normal" batteries are the lithium-ion ones that are used in all mobile devices and also in current electric cars.

But it is true that a lot of work is being done on the development and improvement of batteries, as it is a fundamental piece in the electrification process that is being addressed throughout the world.

Some propose the development of new batteries that have a greater load capacity, and thus be able to have greater autonomy. But these batteries need new materials, and the entire production process must be developed and tested, so it is possible that they will be available in 10 years or more. And it is a path that must be followed to see where it leads us.

On the other hand, others try to improve the current lithium-ion batteries with the incorporation of certain improvements that provide them with greater charging capacities, or faster recharging speeds.

And this is the case of the  EC Power company, which has shown an improvement to reduce the recharging time of current batteries.

The enhancement consists of an ultra-thin sheet of nickel that is placed over the battery's electrodes. This sheet self-regulates the temperature of the battery allowing internal chemical reactions to take place more quickly, and therefore the battery recharges in less time.

Batteries generally work best when they are somewhat warm, but not very hot. And temperature control has long been a headache for battery developers. The problem is doing it simply and cheaply.

In the tests carried out by EC Power, the batteries reach 70% of their charge in just over 10 minutes, which has nothing to do with the almost one hour that current batteries need. And they also verified that they supported up to 2,000 recharge cycles without losing properties.

Today electric cars must use batteries with high charging capacity (they are more expensive) to have a decent autonomy. But if the same batteries could be recharged in 10 minutes (the time it takes to have a cup of coffee), cars could run on batteries with less capacity that recharge rapidly every 2-3 hours of driving.

And since the price of batteries is a fundamental part of today's electric cars, with simpler batteries the price of these cars would be much lower. And at a lower price, more users would buy them.

I think this is very good news first for electric cars, and in the future (if these properties are confirmed) for the rest of the possible users, which we all are.

As always, time will tell.
