Until recently I thought not, that it was an unnecessary device in a house, but reading an article I discovered that I was wrong. Smart plugs are a practical device to perform a series of simple and easily controllable functions.

As its name suggests, it is a power plug to which any device that needs power can be connected; and the “intelligence” is provided by the possibility that the plug is controlled remotely by means of a mobile and a Wi-Fi connection, a Bluetooth connection, or of another type.

With this device you can connect and turn off any device that is plugged into it. If the device consumes a certain power, logically the smart plug that controls it must be able to support it.

With them you can allow electricity to pass or not through any device, and therefore you can program its on and off; and with some models you can monitor the electrical consumption of the device in question.

As the smart plug is cheap and simple (around 20 euros) it can be used for many different applications:

Turn some lights on and off when we are away to make others believe that we are at home.

Connect or disconnect at our convenience a heating or air conditioning system.

Remotely control the system of a swimming pool, a garden, etc...

Automate some Christmas lights.

Etc ….

The possible benefits are many. Always very simple things, and that can be done easily and at a very low cost.

No wonder they sell so much.
