Every day you can see more news about the business of aerial drones for the delivery of products, and I wonder if they really make sense, because not everything that is technically possible necessarily makes practical and economic sense.

I explain myself. It can be great when you order something from your home, and a few minutes later a drone appears over your house and drops the product you ordered on your doorstep.

But is it really necessary? In my opinion it will depend on the type of shipment and its urgency. Sending medicine to a hospital is not the same as sending a pizza to some ones house.

Urgent and vital things must be prioritized over those that are not. And most of what individuals request from home are not vital, and on many occasions, not even urgent. And I speak for the people I know.

The Wing company (owned by Alphabet) is doing that service in Australia and Texas, and apparently with some success. So it is more than likely that it will spread to other cities. And there are also many other companies doing similar tests and seeing the viability of the business.

But if we think about sustainable activities, I am very clear that it will always be more efficient to make grouped deliveries than individual deliveries, that going by road costs less than by air, and that airspace is also a good for everyone that should not be relegated. to abuse. And less without absolute necessity.

Aerial drones are welcome to quickly deliver necessary and urgent organs or medicines to hospitals, but not for anything.

One thing is to test new technologies, and quite another to help support business models that are not self-sustaining. And I think this is a pretty clear case.
