On June 18, 2023, Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved a new climate law that will see the country reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.

The Law on Climate Protection, Innovation and Strengthening Energy Security Goals was passed with 59.1% of the vote, a clear majority that sent a strong signal to the world that Switzerland is committed to taking action on climate change.

And this referendum has been proposed by most political parties and with the opposition of the extreme right SPP (Swiss People's Party), as it happens in almost all countries. And it has been done because, among other things, the glaciers of the Swiss Alps have already lost 30% of their volume in the last 20 years.

The new law sets a number of ambitious goals, including:

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

Achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Invest 2 billion Swiss francs (about $2.2 billion) in renewable energy and energy efficiency measures.

Promote the development of negative emission technologies, such as carbon capture and storage.

The law also includes a number of provisions to help ensure that the transition to a low carbon economy is just. For example, it provides financial support to businesses and households struggling to switch to cleaner energy.

In the following photo you can see how a valley was years ago and how it is today.

The approval of the new climate law is a great victory for the Swiss government and for climate activists. It shows that the Swiss people are committed to taking action on climate change, even in the face of opposition from some sectors. The law is also an important step forward for Switzerland's international reputation as a leader in climate action.

The new law is not without its challenges. It will require a significant change in the way Switzerland produces and consumes energy. However, the government is confident that the law is workable and has already begun to put in place the necessary measures to make it a reality.

The approval of the new climate law is an important milestone in Switzerland's journey towards a low carbon future. It is a sign that the Swiss people are taking climate change seriously and sends a strong signal to the world that Switzerland is committed to playing its part in meeting this global challenge.

The new climate law will have a significant impact on the Swiss economy and society. It will require a major change in the way Switzerland produces and consumes energy, and will create new opportunities for companies and jobs in the clean energy sector. The law will also help reduce Switzerland's dependence on imported energy, making the country more energy secure.

The new law is also likely to have a positive impact on the Swiss environment. It will help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which will improve air quality and help mitigate the effects of climate change. The law will also help protect Switzerland's glaciers and other natural assets.

The approval of the new climate law is a great victory for the Swiss people and for climate activists. It shows that the Swiss are committed to taking action on climate change and sends a strong signal to the world that Switzerland is a leader in climate action.

In short, a more than positive message for everyone. I wish it were repeated in all countries, and put into practice.
