The automotive industry never ceases to amaze. Just when it seemed we'd seen it all in terms of electrification, autonomous driving, and intelligent assistants, some Chinese luxury SUV brands have unveiled a feature as striking as it is unexpected: cars capable of driving on three wheels.

While it might seem like a scene from a science fiction movie, this is a real technology that has already been demonstrated in several high-end models thanks to advanced active suspension systems. The vehicle can raise one of its wheels and continue moving at low speeds, typically around 15 km/h (9 mph).

The key lies in the new intelligent active suspensions. These systems can independently adjust the height of each wheel in a matter of seconds, adapting to the terrain and maintaining vehicle stability.

Some Chinese luxury manufacturers, such as BYD's Yangwang brand, have showcased vehicles capable of lifting a wheel in a controlled manner and continuing to move forward thanks to sophisticated hydraulic and electronic body control systems. These technologies were initially developed to improve comfort, stability, and off-road capabilities, but have ended up offering such intriguing functions as this one.

At first glance, it might seem like simply a technological demonstration intended to impress the public. However, there are interesting practical applications.

For example, on very rough terrain, with ditches, rocks, or steep inclines, the ability to lift a wheel could help the vehicle get out of a difficult situation without external assistance.

But perhaps the most striking application is changing tires. In the demonstrations, the system raises the car enough to remove a wheel without using a traditional jack. The lifting operation can be completed in less than a minute, and the tire change in just a few additional minutes.

If this technology were to become widespread, it could greatly simplify one of the most inconvenient tasks for many drivers.

The emergence of this feature also reflects the intense competition that currently exists among Chinese automakers. For years, innovation in the sector seemed to focus primarily on engines, range, and infotainment systems. Today, however, many brands are seeking to differentiate themselves through striking and visually appealing technologies that directly impact the consumer.

And few things attract more attention than seeing a large SUV driving with one wheel suspended in the air. In this sense, the feature has a clear marketing component. It's a technological demonstration that conveys sophistication, engineering prowess, and exclusivity.

Will this technology eventually reach more affordable cars? The answer will depend mainly on cost. Currently, these advanced active suspension systems are reserved for high-end SUVs with high price tags. However, automotive history shows that many innovations begin in the premium segments and, over time, eventually make their way to more accessible vehicles.

It happened with ABS, parking sensors, rearview cameras, and driver assistance systems. What seems like an exclusive luxury today could become standard equipment tomorrow.

Therefore, although the possibility of driving on three wheels is currently a technological curiosity, it's not unreasonable to think that in the future we might see mid-range vehicles capable of changing a tire without using a jack.

Perhaps in a few years we'll remember this innovation as a mere technological anecdote. Or perhaps it's the beginning of a new generation of intelligent suspensions capable of facilitating driving, improving safety, and simplifying vehicle maintenance.

For now, what's clear is that Chinese manufacturers continue to demonstrate an enormous capacity for innovation and surprise. And although driving on three wheels isn't an everyday necessity for most drivers, it's one of those technologies that, once seen, is hard to forget.

We'll see what the future holds for the automotive world.
