In May 2025, OpenAI surprised the world by announcing a partnership with Jony Ive, the legendary designer responsible for some of Apple's most iconic products. The goal was as ambitious as it was mysterious: to create a physical device designed from the ground up to work seamlessly with ChatGPT's artificial intelligence.
After more than a year of silence, new rumors have begun to surface suggesting that this highly anticipated product could hit the market in 2027. Although OpenAI remains extremely secretive, various leaks agree that it won't be a mobile phone, a smartwatch, or augmented reality glasses. Everything indicates that it will be an almost entirely new category of device, more akin to a speaker.
The information published so far describes a small, portable device, without a screen, whose primary form of communication would be voice. A kind of permanent personal assistant, capable of natural conversation and accompanying the user throughout the day, and with a rounded shape so that it can be easily carried from one place to another with one hand.
Its mission would go far beyond answering questions. It could read and reply to emails, manage calendars, remind users of appointments, control home automation systems, organize tasks, perform searches, and assist with a multitude of everyday actions. In short, an artificial intelligence that is always available and increasingly integrated into our lives.
But here's the big question: what price does this convenience come at? To offer truly personalized help, these types of devices need to know the user in depth. The more data it has about our habits, conversations, location, contacts, calendar, and preferences, the better its answers and recommendations will be.

And that's precisely where the debate about privacy arises. Artificial intelligence needs information to be useful. That's a fact. However, each person must decide where the line is drawn between convenience and the protection of their personal data. Because the more an AI knows about us, the greater our dependence on it also becomes.
Meanwhile, OpenAI's hardware project has also begun to be surrounded by controversy. In recent days, Apple has filed a lawsuit in the United States accusing OpenAI and several former employees of misappropriating confidential information related to the development of future products. OpenAI denies the accusations, and it will be up to the courts to determine whether or not there was any misuse of trade secrets. Until then, it's best to avoid drawing definitive conclusions.
Personally, I believe that artificial intelligence represents one of the greatest technological revolutions of our time. I use it frequently and believe it can offer enormous advantages in areas such as productivity, learning, and creativity. However, I'm also very clear that I don't need AI to make all the decisions in my life.
I know for sure that I don't need anyone reminding me to take an umbrella because it might rain, suggesting recipes based on the contents of my refrigerator, planning my vacations, or knowing my every move. I prefer to continue making many of those little decisions myself.
Perhaps I belong to a generation that still values preserving some privacy. Perhaps in a few years these devices will be as commonplace as mobile phones are today. We don't know.
What does seem clear is that OpenAI wants to create a product—which could be a huge business for them—that will mark a turning point in the relationship between people and artificial intelligence.
Will it be the next great technological leap or simply an overly invasive experiment? We'll probably start to find out the answer in 2027. And, at least in my case, I'm pretty sure it won't be a device I'm going to buy.
