Up until now you buy a car with a series of accessories and functionalities, and you have them forever. But in the future it will not be like that. Or at least that's what car manufacturers have in mind.

The new cars have a powerful central computer that controls all its functions. From the power generated by its engines, to the radius of rotation of the wheels, the heating of the seats, the autonomous steering system, etc…. practically everything.

And what's more, everything is controlled by software that can be updated remotely and without having to go to a dealer of the manufacturer's brand. As we do today with mobiles, to which we also add the APPs that we like.

That same business model wants to control car manufacturers. That once the car is purchased we can add features for which we pay subscriptions of a certain amount each month, or per year.

And the most talked about case in the news recently has been that of BMW, which in some countries charges an $18 per month subscription for heated seats in the vehicle, or $180 per year.

And this is not something new, Tesla has been doing it for many years with its autonomous driving system, and charges $199 a month. Or the alternative of paying more than 10,000 dollars to have it forever, but paying for some updates. Come on, you have a Tesla and you're always paying.

General Motors also applies it to some of its new models, and last year it said it had taken in $2 billion, and they say they expect to get $25 billion by the end of this decade.

And they are all going to go the same way: What is not clear is to what extent we users will resist, since we are left with the option of not paying for those subscriptions that they want to impose on us.

This is huge business for car manufacturers, and they will fight hard not to lose it. They've seen how well Apple and Google are doing with their mobile systems, and they want the same.

Will we end up giving in?
