Marine farms have developed enormously in recent years and provide food for many millions of people. But with current technological means, this market niche has realized that it can carry out its activity a few kilometers from the seashore, with certain advantages and disadvantages.

What began as fish farms in cages in the middle of the sea, have evolved into inland fish pools, but connected to seawater.

In this way, the breeding and care of the fish is simpler and cheaper, and its control much simpler and more effective. So every day there are more companies around the world that are located inland to raise fish, from salmon to other species. And there are tens of thousands of tons of fish that reach the market from these types of farms.

The main drawback they have is the need to have a continuous flow of seawater, and so that this expense is not excessive, the water is recirculated and the waste from the fish is eliminated, which is filtered and recycled so that the water supply is always clean.

In general, more than 90% of the water used is recycled, so it is not necessary to bring much water from the sea. And with this system, the contamination of wild fishing by the fish that are in the farms is avoided.

One drawback is the cost of electricity to move the motors that recirculate the used water, which some experts estimate between 3 and 5 KW/h per kilo of fish produced, which is partly offset by the lower cost of labor.

And one risk is that if the control system fails, in a short time the fish could be affected, but this is corrected with redundant process control systems.

I believe that the future is out there, and that it is profitable, I have no doubt, since more and more facilities of this type are being built, and some are built tens of kilometers from the seashore.

And if we take into account that by the year 2050 there will be 9,000 million people on Earth, farmed fish is a good source of food, since it represents the most efficient source of protein of animal origin.

Without a doubt, this is a market with a good future.
