Throughout the world there are many millions of people who do not live in cities, but in private homes and separated from each other. People who live in these conditions can have their orders sent by means of aerial drones, and there are a few companies doing testing for a while.

One of the most advanced companies is  Wing   (which belongs to the Alphabet group, of which Google is also a part), which is testing deliveries in different cities in different countries (Australia, Ireland and the USA).

Until now, companies make deliveries without added costs due to the fact of serving customers with aerial drones, since what they want is to obtain information and experiences of what happens to them.

I have seen some statements made from the executive manager of Wing in which he says that they are going to modify their delivery strategy, not with purely logistical concepts but using data network concepts, where many drones and many shipments are handled in parallel at the same time. They have called the idea the Wing Delivery Network.

Several Alphabet companies work in high-tech fields and have good experience in handling "Big Data", and that can be well used by the people of Wing.

Basically the new Wing Delivery System is based on three parameters:

  • Delivery drones
  • The spaces where the drones land and take off, and change their batteries when necessary
  • Autoloaders for other companies to leave their shipments ready to be picked up by a drone automatically

Thus the drones move between the landing/takeoff zones and the delivery addresses to the customers. And multiple drones can be controlled by one controller.

The idea of the autoloader is very interesting, where a shipment can be left ready for the drone to pick it up automatically.

And you can see a very interesting video at: https://youtu.be/xEcspDhZJuM

Now we just need to know when these companies will be able to generate profits. And that is not easy. Wing has the advantage of having technologies and money to invest, but even with that no one has a guaranteed future.

Wing's idea seems very good to me and I'm sure there will be others who imitate it. And as always, time will tell us where each one ends up.
