General Motors has announced a profound change in its future manufacturing and sales strategy, announcing that in the (near?) future it will separate the Platform from the car from the Software that controls it.

A few months ago I reflected on the tendency of car manufacturers to behave like smart-phone manufacturers and make money with APPs and their updates. And this is the first step for a large company in that direction. The others will follow, and quickly.

They have called the new software platform Ultifi and will be incorporating it in the new vehicles that appear from the year 2023.

The new General Motors cars will be made up of two parts: a vehicle intelligence platform (VIP) and a software platform (Ultifi), with the software controlling the vehicle.

Similar to what happens on a mobile phone or on a computer.

This is the first step for General Motors to change its business model, and in the future revenues will come from two paths: through the platform (when the vehicle is sold and with subsequent spare parts) and through software modifications and APP's that are included.

GM has already announced that it will open its platform to external software developers to develop applications, and the degree of percentage that these will take when customers pay for them is yet to be decided.

Because one thing is clear at General Motors, and that is that they will enter what customers pay and then they will make the corresponding distribution to the companies that collaborate with them. Because we all know that the one who distributes and distributes well, always gets the best part.

Just like Apple.

It is clear that cars are going to have greater customization possibilities every day and almost all of this will be through software. And throughout the life of the car, manufacturers are going to be making income from the sales of their vehicles.

Just like Apple.

I think it is very clear where the future of the automotive industry is going.
