I am clear that smart rings have represented a technological leap, and what I am not clear about is if it will be a passing fad or if it will last over time. Although I lean toward the latter.

The smart ring market is experiencing an unprecedented boom. These devices, which at first glance look like ordinary jewelry, hide inside complex technology capable of monitoring our health, controlling our environment and even making payments. But are they really worth it?

Smart rings offer a variety of functions ranging from fitness and sleep tracking to notification management, music control, and some even make contactless payments.

There are many models and new ones continue to appear. Samsung has announced its own and Apple is expected to follow suit, with some models even integrating sensors to measure body temperature, heart rate and even blood oxygen level.

It is a large growing market. In 2023 the world market was about 300 billion dollars, and it is expected to reach 2,500 billion in 2030, and that explains why many companies are launching into this market.

In general it can be said that they have a series of positive characteristics:

  • Discreet and elegant design: Unlike smartwatches, smart rings are more discreet and lighter, making them ideal for those looking for a device that is not so flashy.
  • Comfort of use: They can be used throughout the day, even while sleeping, without causing discomfort.
  • Intuitive interface: Most smart rings are controlled using simple, easy-to-learn gestures.
  • Access to valuable data: The data collected by the ring can help improve the user's health and well-being.

But also some clear drawbacks:

  • High price: Smart rings are still a relatively new product, so their price is usually high.
  • Limited features: While they offer a variety of features, they are still not as complete as those offered by smartwatches.
  • Short battery life: Most smart rings have a short battery life, requiring daily charging.
  • Compatibility issues: Some smart rings are only compatible with certain mobile devices.
  • And the privacy of the data they collect is not guaranteed at all

Who are the people who use these smart rings the most? Generally young people looking for a discreet and elegant device to monitor their health and physical activity, and also fitness enthusiasts. And today there are many people that fit this description.

These devices consist of sensors, software and connection capacity. And measurement calculations are performed on other devices or in a cloud, and then the information is presented to the user.

This is part of the Internet of Things (IoT), the rings obtain a lot of personal data from users, and in general we do not know what happens to them, nor if this data is sold to third parties.

We don't have to be excessively innocent. Companies seek to maximize their profits, and in many cases we are the merchandise they sell. Let's be clear, and then make the decision that seems best to us.
