That the future lies in not using fossil fuels is very clear, what happens is that some have it clearer than others, and take more short-term measures because we are already fighting against time to try to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

One of the cities that can serve as an example is Stockholm. They have decided not to use fossil fuels by 2040, ten years before the Paris target, because they know how difficult it is to meet the target and it is good to leave a deadline to resolve any problems that may arise.

Now, everyone's goal should be to achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible, make specific plans to get it, and measure what is happening every year to ensure that it is met. We have a lot at stake and it is to be appreciated that our friends of Stockholm have it so clear.

According to UN data, 70% of greenhouse gases are emitted in cities, and although cities only occupy 3% of the territory, they consume about 70% of the total energy generated.

Then it seems sensible to prioritize the actions of what happens in the cities in the sense of avoiding the use of fossil fuels in their environment.

In Stockholm they have adopted a series of strategies that go in that direction, such as:

  • Abandon coal as fuel immediately
  • Increase the energy efficiency of buildings and facilities
  • Renew the means of transport for non-polluting ones
  • Improve recycling rate
  • Prohibit the movement of vehicles that use fossil fuels
  • Etc …..

They want to increase the use of electric vehicles and chargers scattered around the city.

In Sweden, more than 50% of the cars sold are electric or plug-in hybrids, but the carbon neutrality desired by Stockholm requires having 100% electric cars, and that is only achieved by boosting chargers throughout the city.

I would very much like that in Spain we take this issue with the same seriousness, because here there is a lot of talk about it, but very few concrete actions are addressed. A shame.
