The climate change crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today, and its effects are felt in many areas of daily life, including food and other basic services that directly affect our pockets.

On the one hand, climate change is causing a greater frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, etc... that have an impact on agricultural production. And at the same time, the increase in global temperature is affecting the yield and quality of crops, reducing the supply of food and increasing prices.

We have an example in Europe, where heat waves and droughts have affected pastures and crops used by livestock as feed. This has caused a decrease in dairy products, and therefore an increase in prices in grocery stores.

A similar case is the increase in the prices of basic products such as wheat, rice and corn, which are the basis of food for millions of people around the world. Their prices have risen in international markets, and this especially affects the poorest people, who become a little poorer still.

But it's not just food, climate change also affects other basic services such as water, energy, etc... We have less and less water (its level in rivers and aquifers falls), and obtaining it from desalination plants is more expensive, for which raises the price of the service that humble consumers end up paying.

Every time I hear about the enormous costs of avoiding the consequences of climate change, I would like to see the enormous costs of not doing so next to it. That in the medium term they are greater, and in the long term they are even much greater.

The solution is very complex, and it will become more complex the longer it takes to put the mechanisms of change into motion.

When there was the Covid-19 pandemic, the world mobilized and everything necessary was invested to get out of that bad dream in record time. But we have a much bigger challenge in front of us, for which adequate means are not provided to solve it, and that is because there are many economic interests involved.

We are heading towards another year that is hotter than the previous ones, with other minimum levels of water, more crop losses, etc… and most people continue to pollute with the greatest of joy, without being aware of the hole they are in, and of the future that they are leaving to their descendants.

As a Society, I think we should wake up and demand that our governments put our interests ahead of those of big business.

Cuanto más tarde lo hagamos, peor solución tendremos.  Yo ya soy un poco mayor, y lo siento por mis nietos y sus hijos.
