The study was published in Nature Communications and carried out by experts from China and the USA, and indicates that most of the time the electrical energy needed by industrialized countries can be obtained from solar and wind plants.
To carry out this study, the team analyzed the energy needs of 42 industrialized countries over 39 years. And they evaluated the possibilities of solar and wind power to meet those energy demands.
It is true that in certain moments of lack of wind and sun it is necessary to resort to alternative energy supplies, but it is no less true that if the energy connection between countries is considered, in many moments energy can be derived from one country to another that has best wind or sun conditions.
Countries with lower latitudes (closer to the equator) have more stable hours of sunshine, but other countries not far away may have more wind.

In the case of Europe, for example, the southern countries (Spain, Italy, etc…) can collaborate with the countries further north, which will have less sun, but may have more wind. If energy is transferred from one to another, fewer storage systems are needed for times of little sun or little wind in other areas.
And the same thing happens in America and other areas of the globe. We have a global energy problem, which should be analyzed with a more global and less national mentality.
It is true that it will be necessary to have alternative energy storage systems for special moments, but with a good international “organization”, those special moments will be smaller and could be solved more easily.
I recognize that it is very difficult to completely eliminate the need for energy generation by fossil or nuclear means for those moments of low electricity generation with sustainable energies, but the Report of these experts (I like that it was a joint team of Chinese and Americans) indicates what can be done.
I think it's a matter of "will". Today we have the technology to do it, but the political will to achieve it is lacking.
