Decarbonizing maritime transport is one of the most difficult challenges in the fight against climate change. Large cargo ships consume enormous quantities of fuel, and until now, it seemed almost impossible to imagine them running on clean energy. But the shipping industry is beginning to demonstrate that, although the road ahead is long, progress is possible.

A Chinese shipyard has marked a significant milestone. Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has delivered a car carrier that combines liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines with a solar panel system connected to the ship's electrical grid. It is the first 10,000-vehicle class cargo ship in the world equipped with photovoltaic generation.

The ship, named Glovis Nova, is 230 meters long and can carry up to 10,800 vehicles across 14 decks: nine fixed and five height-adjustable. It was delivered to the South Korean company Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) and will operate on routes between Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe under the Hyundai Glovis brand.

Its photovoltaic system reaches a peak power of 200 kW, and on a day with 5.5 to 7 hours of sunlight, it can generate approximately 1,000 kWh of additional energy for the ship's consumption. While not enough to power the cargo ship on its own, it significantly reduces its reliance on fossil fuels for onboard electrical systems.

Furthermore, it features dual-fuel engines that can run on both LNG and conventional fuel, and its tanks are sized to allow for an entire voyage without refueling. All of this allows it to cruise at 19 knots, meeting the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) strict Tier III emissions standards.

Is this enough? NO. Let's be honest: LNG is still a fossil fuel and generates CO₂, in addition to raising concerns about potential methane leaks during its production and use. This vessel is not, nor does it pretend to be, a zero-emission ship. But it does represent a very significant incremental step: according to its builders, it reduces emissions by more than 30% compared to a conventional cargo ship powered solely by fuel oil.

The energy transition in maritime transport won't happen overnight. It's not about replacing completely polluting ships with completely clean ones from one day to the next, but rather about gradually incorporating technologies that reduce environmental impact, shipment after shipment. Solar energy, LNG, high-efficiency shaft generators... every little bit helps.

It's a huge challenge, but as the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way. The climate challenge demands that we dedicate all our innovative capacity to a common goal: leaving future generations a more habitable planet. And ships like this demonstrate that, even in the sector most difficult to electrify, the will for change is already underway.
