For personal reasons I have stayed at home for two summer months and without moving much, and when I went out I found myself in a situation very similar to the one before Covid-19.

Almost all the people went without a mask on the street and in the establishments, the traffic was as dense as it was a few years ago, and after having spent the hottest summer of our lives, which is a clear sign that the Climate Emergency is already here, I observe (with little surprise, I have to say) that we continue with our life as usual, without wanting to acknowledge the serious PROBLEM that we have before us.

Because Climate Change (I prefer to call it Climate Emergency) that we are experiencing is a first level problem, and hardly anyone wants to see it or think about it.

And it is not about having to ruin our life, but simply to acknowledge what is happening around us, learn from the experience, and begin to focus our life in a slightly different way, less consumerist, more sustainable. To be able to leave a better future for our grandchildren.

This summer we have had weeks of heat waves around the world, there have been major floods and loss of life in Asia, along with droughts. Everywhere the level of reservoirs and rivers have gone drastically down, and in China they have dedicated themselves to trying to get rainwater by attempting to make it rain by artificial means.

And as soon as the peak of the problems passes, we are all living as if nothing had happened. Just like before Covid-19, which was a very serious knock on the door to make us think a little about our way of life.

As I said before, it is not about tearing off our clothes or shutting ourselves up at home, but it is about thinking about moderating our consumerist desire.

I think that in the developed world we can live quite well, trying to do it in a more sustainable way and consuming without the present enthusiasm. Some economists warn us that we will have to "decrease" a little to better distribute what our planet gives us.

I believe that we cannot continue consuming 1.8 times what the planet generates, because we are killing it, and we do not have an alternative planet. Sometimes I am surprised when trips to other distant planets are announced to settle there. And I wonder are we complete idiots? Why don't we dedicate ourselves to preserving the wonderful planet we have?

And please don't call me a pessimist, because I think I'm not. I consider myself an informed optimist, and information makes me more skeptical every day.
