Not much has been said, but a delegation from Namibia has visited the European Community to offer their country as a possibility to offer clean and non-polluting energy for the EU countries.
And if you think about it a little, it's not nonsense. Namibia is one of the least populated African countries in the world (there are just over 2.5 million people) and is 60% larger than Spain. It is a little below the Earth's equator (so it has many hours of sunshine) and is very flat, so it can be a good center for generating solar energy.
Once solar energy has been obtained, different non-polluting projects can be tackled with it. From obtaining hydrogen, to obtaining drinking water using desalination plants near the coast. And we have to take into account that water and hydrogen are going to be scarce goods within a short time.
Namibia is a relatively large country, much larger than Spain, but with less than 3 million people, so they have a lot of physical space to tackle different projects that allow them to export their products.
On the other hand, Europe needs to obtain non-polluting alternative energies in the shortest possible time, and Namibia can be a good supply alternative that will also help Europe to diversify its energy supplies.
Large solar power plants could be placed in Namibia to obtain electrical energy, and from it obtain hydrogen that could be sent to Europe to move all kinds of heavy machinery: trains, ships, etc...
But the economic issue is yet to be clarified, since it is necessary to obtain electricity from the sun, in addition to obtaining water, to later obtain hydrogen and then manipulate it so that it can be transported (by ship or through a pipeline) and taken to its place of consumption. And all this is very expensive.
In the European plans is to get 10 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030, but it is not clear how that goal will be achieved. And that is what has moved our friends of Namibia to make their proposal to Europe.
I think that for their part it is a timely and intelligent position, and we Europeans have to be very humble and collaborate with all those who can help us to depend less on oil and face the enormous challenge of energy change that lies ahead.
We will all win. And Africa also needs to find products that it can offer to the developed world, to help its citizens find ways of life with a certain future.
I hope that between them and the rest of the countries they will be able to find points of collaboration.
