With the recovery from Covid-19, flights were also recovered by increasing the lists of passengers willing to fly. But with the latest economic crisis (Ukrainian war, etc….) the prices of products and services have increased significantly, and this also affects low-cost flights.

I have read some statements by the president of  Ryanair  ( Mr. O'Leary ) saying that in his opinion people should forget about the cheap fares of the past, flights for a price of 10 euros and sometimes less, due to the new prices of all kinds of supplies.

Almost certainly he is right, because he knows his business well, but I think that the reflection should be much deeper. Especially when this past summer the high temperatures we have suffered have sent us all a loud and clear message: The Climate Emergency is here, we are going to suffer it in our flesh, and its consequences are going to be very, very expensive.

And faced with such an important dilemma, people should seriously rethink what we do, what we consume, and the need for all of it. In short, our way of life. Calmly and without drama, but also with a bit of seriousness, thinking about the medium/long term, and about the future that we leave to our descendants.

And within that rethinking are the cheap flights (very cheap) offered by companies like Ryanair, Easyjet, and many others. On many occasions they are not necessary at all; we do them because we can pay for them, without thinking about the polluting effect we generate.

What I reflect on cheap flights can be applied to many other things, but this is one of the least "necessary". If we are not going to spend a weekend with some friends 600 km or more away, nothing happens. We can spend that weekend in a different way, polluting less, and enjoying what surrounds us.

To be reasonably happy, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money, or go very far, or make a lot of noise, or buy and own a lot of things, or... so many things that confuse us in our day to day.

We live in a consumer society that pushes us to consume without thinking, and that is what the companies and the marketing that floods us take care of. But we have the ability to think critically, and the obligation to leave our grandchildren a similar or better nature than the one we received from our elders.

And this summer we have all received a very clear message from our planet. Are we going to listen to it? And are we going to do something about it?

It is up to each of us to contribute our grain of sand. I'm sure it's very small, but it’s something to begin with.
