Although it did not have much media coverage, perhaps because it coincided with the soccer world championship, the Biodiversity Conference held in Montreal achieved unexpected positive results, at least in theory. Now it is necessary to see how the agreed objectives are met.
The conference sponsored by the UN lasted two weeks, and the main agreement signed by 190 countries is to achieve by the end of this decade (in the year 2030) the protection of 30% of the surface of the earth and the seas of our planet.
And the protection of these areas will be done without affecting the indigenous communities that live in them, so as not to repeat some mistakes made in the past.
According to experts, there are almost a million animal and plant species at risk of extinction, and this measure, if we are able to comply with it, will help most of them to continue with us.
We have to recognize that every day there is a greater sensitivity in society to environmental issues, but also the risk that we face is greater. And the problem is that we are fighting against time, and that every day we have less time to react.
All the agreements that can be reached are welcome, but the most important thing is the commitment of our leaders to change things, and that often gives me many doubts.
It is very easy to throw the ball forward and sign "agreements" that many of the signatories do not know if they are going to be fulfilled or not. It goes down well with everyone and they appear in the “photo” of the moment, but in a few years, or maybe just a few months, commitments are relaxed and milestones are not met.
I admit that today I am a bit pessimistic, but every time I believe less in what they tell me, and more in the reality that I see around me.
I would like nothing more than to be wrong.
