Every time I read a news article about a company announcing a new solid-state battery, saying that it will soon be in production and that it hopes to revolutionize the world of electric cars, I can't resist smiling. But I have found that many people believe it.

In a meeting I had with some friends a few days ago, the topic of electric cars came up collaterally and a few of them advised the rest that they should wait a little over a year to be able to buy the new electric cars with state-of-the-art solid batteries. since it would have prices similar to or lower than current ones, and much better technical characteristics than the cars that are on sale today.

And that's because people believe what they see, hear or read in the news, without doing any type of analysis on their part. And because those who promote this news in the media also do not know what they are talking about, and they repeat what they have heard from others, pretending to know what they are talking about.

I have worked for 40 years in industrial issues, and I know first-hand how difficult it is to go from an idea or a laboratory prototype to a mass-produced, reliable product that can be sold safely.

From what I gather from the news, it seems that solid-state batteries could become a good alternative to the current lithium-ion batteries. But I think they are a decade away from reaching the market in conditions of: adequate price, specifications, safety of operation, etc...

If you look closely at the advertisements for new solid-state batteries, I have never seen anything related to the expected cost of them compared to those of lithium. And that makes me suspect that manufacturers are quite far from being able to manufacture them at competitive prices with current ones. And that's why they don't say anything.

And that's not a bad thing, it's normal. New products are initially more expensive and it takes a long time for manufacturers to be able to lower their costs. And that requires a certain time.

For a new type of battery to be validated by the market and adopted by the industry, it needs to “demonstrate” its: safety, duration, technical characteristics, cost, environmental impact, etc…. And that, dear friends, will take a few years.

But it is true that within some time it is more than possible that we will have a new type of batteries (solid state) that solve some of the current problems of electric cars.

Time brings everything.
