Toyota has been working on the possibility of fueling vehicles with hydrogen for many years, and although it seems clear that it is not effective for small vehicles such as cars, the situation may be very different for large vehicles: trucks, trains, ships, etc …. and industrial processes that require a lot of energy.

Not long ago was published the news of the project carried out in the USA by Toyota and the truck manufacturer Kenworth. They called the Project  “Shore to Store“  and used a fleet of 10 Toyota-Kenworth trucks (as seen in the photo below) running on a hydrogen fuel cell.

The trucks worked in the area of the port of Los Angeles ( USA ) to transport material to the surroundings. These trucks (called T680) that can carry more than 40 tons, were powered by hydrogen and replaced similar ones powered by diesel.

In their works they exceeded 400 km of autonomy, and were recharged with hydrogen in about 15 minutes. And during the duration of the project, there was a rise in fuels, and running on hydrogen ended up being cheaper than diesel. Which gives a very important idea of the good future possibility of this fuel for large vehicles.

Project managers also estimated that each T680 truck saves 75 metric tons of CO2 compared to a similar diesel truck, noting the truck's smooth and quiet operation.

I think it is a very interesting project that truck manufacturers are going to take with interest, because those who take the first steps in the right direction will be at the forefront of a new truck market that is about to emerge.

In the meantime, a lot of research continues to improve hydrogen fuel cells, and the advances made will help to further improve the results that have been obtained in this project.

Things keep getting better, but the question is: will we change in time to avert climate disaster?
