As Artificial Intelligence is introduced in almost all fields, now it’s the turn of the traffic lights that control traffic.
Until now, traffic lights had very simple devices for their control based on the cars circulating on the asphalt, and now with the help of Artificial Intelligence, high-definition cameras and radars are used to measure more traffic parameters such as speed. the density of vehicles, the type of vehicles circulating, the pedestrians waiting for the traffic lights to cross the street, etc.
And based on all this, the Artificial Intelligence program manages the opening and closing of traffic lights to speed up circulation and increase pedestrian safety.
There are two projects carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute in collaboration with other companies to obtain real traffic light data from a particular city ( Lemgo in Germany ), and then see how to expand it to that and other cities in Germany. And I am clear that in a fairly short time it will spread to other cities.

We all know the traffic problems, especially in big cities, and the costs that these problems cause. Giving fluidity to traffic saves many thousands of lost hours, CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, people's stress, etc... The economic savings can be very important.
AI algorithms learn by themselves based on the results they obtain, and adapt to improve those results, so improvements are noticed in a short time.
And something important is that since these algorithms learn by themselves, it is quite easy to move the application from one area to another, and spread it through a city step by step.
The great flexibility is an important part of the ease that AI has to grow, and of course there are many other companies doing similar projects around the rest of the world.
In addition to the Fraunhofer Institute projects discussed here, there are more companies like IBM and others that are undertaking more or less similar projects. The needs are many and there is also room for many.
