Indeed, France has banned short-haul domestic flights if there is an alternative train journey that takes less than two and a half hours. The ban has been introduced in May 2023 as part of the country's climate legislation. The aim of the ban is to reduce carbon emissions from air travel and encourage people to take the train.

The ban applies to flights between Paris and several regional cities, including Bordeaux, Lyon and Nantes. It does not apply to flights that connect to international flights, or to flights that are essential for medical or other reasons.

The ban has been welcomed by environmental groups, who say it is a significant step towards reducing France's carbon emissions. However, some airlines have criticized the ban, saying it will make it more difficult for people to travel between different parts of the country.

It remains to be seen how effective the ban will be in reducing carbon emissions. However, it is a clear sign that France is committed to taking action against climate change.

Here are some of the benefits of the ban:

It will reduce carbon emissions from air travel. On average, a passenger traveling by plane emits 77 times more CO2 than the same passenger traveling by train.

It will encourage people to take the train instead of flying, which is a more environmentally friendly option.

It will help reduce traffic congestion on highways and airports.

And the most important thing is that it will help to change people's mentality regarding the ways of traveling.

I think it is a very positive measure that could have been a little more ambitious. Various associations had asked to limit air travel when there were train alternatives lasting less than 4 hours.

Hopefully the example will spread throughout Europe and if possible extending the duration of the train trip to 4 hours or even more. There is a lot that we have at stake, that makes essential we do a little of our part and change our ways of life.
