Every day more companies announce autonomous driving modalities for their cars, and even some like Tesla say they are willing to offer their autonomous driving service to other manufacturers. And I think all of this is fundamentally a marketing campaign by these companies, since it costs them nothing to say these things and so they appear in the media. It is a propaganda that is very cheap for them.

Starting with Tesla, they have been saying for years that they had a “full-driving” system, which in reality is not FULL at all, since it does not even reach Level 3 of autonomous driving. Now its President (Elon Musk) says again that they hope to have it resolved by the end of this year, 2023. Something that he has been saying for more than 3 years.

In the case of Ford, in the USA it offers its “BlueCruise” autonomous driving system on some models, and now it will also offer it in Europe, starting with the UK, and then Germany and France will follow.

In England, Ford's system will work on 6,000 km of highways (called Blue Zones) that go from north to south of the country, and Ford does not deceive and warns that with its system the driver must remain attentive behind the wheel.

The system has a series of cameras and sensors, which, in addition to the road, analyze the driver, and if they see that he is confused for more than 10 seconds of what is happening on the road, in this case the system makes a warning call. And if he does not react, the brake is slightly activated and the driving system is disconnected by sounding an audible alarm

The Ford system in the UK is already used by some customers for a monthly price of 21 euros. And as it develops and improves, it will include more roads, but always demanding the driver's attention, and without Ford's interest in moving beyond Level 3 autonomous driving.

No car manufacturer is interested in moving beyond Level 3 of autonomous driving, because that way drivers will always be responsible for what happens to their car. Since they are the ones who drive, and the car manufacturer “only” offers them aids to facilitate their driving.

This point is essential to avoid future accident liability problems.

And the fact that some manufacturers license their autonomous driving system to others is not easy either. Because today they are very complex systems of Hardware (computer, sensors, etc...) and Software that are evolving. And something that is not standard or repetitive is difficult to transfer from one manufacturer to another.

If in a few years the computers of electric cars and the sensors they carry are standardized, it is possible that programs from some manufacturers can be transferred to others. But for that to happen there is still plenty of time.
