From what I have read, mobile screens are about to take a very important leap in their evolution, also becoming speakers thanks to piezoelectric transducer technology. This advancement can revolutionize the way we consume multimedia content, forever changing the audio experience on our smartphones.

Piezoelectric transducers are devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical vibrations and vice versa. By integrating them into the mobile screen, it can become a speaker, vibrating and emitting sound.

This may sound very easy, but doing it is not so simple. The loud speaker must be very narrow so that it takes up little physical space, and the screen must be different from current ones so that it is capable of vibrating and emitting sound waves.

The advantages can be important:

  • Surround sound: The entire screen becomes a sound source, creating a more immersive and directional experience
  • • Improved audio quality: Piezoelectric transducers offer greater precision and clarity in sound, especially in high frequencies.
  • Thinner and lighter design: By eliminating the need for traditional speakers, mobile phones can be thinner and lighter.
  • Greater water resistance: Piezoelectric transducers are more water resistant than traditional speakers, making mobile phones more durable.

The technology can be used for cell phones, computers and any other product that has a screen, and there are already several companies working on this topic, and the advantages are so obvious that it will not take long for them to be on the market. Any user would like to have a more enveloping and immersive sensation of the sound they perceive.

For other information, I have learned that the company Synaptics has already developed a chip that incorporates a high-voltage amplifier and a signal processor capable of applying signals to piezoelectric transducers that are glued to the back of a screen.

All that remains is to make screens capable of vibrating, and that is quite possible with the great development that new screens are experiencing.

Piezoelectric transducer technology is expected to become widespread in the coming years, becoming the norm in high-end mobile phones. And as the technology develops, costs are expected to drop and energy efficiency improve.

Mobile screens as speakers are a revolution in the making that can change the way we consume multimedia content. With better audio quality, a slimmer design and a more immersive experience, this technology has the potential to transform the smartphone industry.

As always, time will tell.
