After the scandal caused by the spy program called Pegasus, which was sold by the Israeli Company NSO Group so that its clients (governments and companies) could spy on certain people, now things seem calmer because electronic espionage news is hardly published, but that doesn’t mean that the situation has changed.
The US government sanctioned the company NSO at the end of 2021 because its Pegasus spy program violated the rights of journalists, politicians and human rights defenders.
And that was a strong setback for the powerful Israeli industry dedicated to hacking. Some companies have disappeared, others have changed their name and their activity has evolved, etc… But the need for the “market” is still present, and the technicians are still alive and, I suppose, working.
In Europe there are companies that carry out more or less similar functions, and others have settled in Eastern countries (Kazakhstan, etc…) that have more permissive legislation on the subject of human rights.
The more or less covert dictatorships have not diminished in recent years, but rather are becoming more powerful. And also some countries that declare themselves democratic are governed by autocratic leaders, who like to control the citizens of their country. And those leaders need tools to control people.
When there is a need, there is a market, and if there is a market, someone will supply with what it needs.
Now there are governments that offer many good opportunities for hacking experts to work with them and/or create companies in their countries.
Make no mistake, the powerful people will do everything possible to stay in power for as long as they can, and the information that electronic espionage offers them is an essential tool for them.
Pegasus will be replaced by other programs (I'm sure there are already), and we mere mortals will only find out if there is an "error" in its use.
