For years, autonomous taxis seemed like a technology reserved for the United States and China. While in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Wuhan, and Beijing, thousands of users already regularly use driverless vehicles, Europe observed the phenomenon from a distance. However, everything indicates that 2026 will be remembered as the year robotaxis began circulating on European streets.
The announcements made in recent months show that the sector is entering a new phase. Madrid, London, Munich, and other major European cities have been chosen to host the first commercial deployments of this technology. The feeling is clear: Europe wants to make up for lost time in one of the most promising technology markets of the coming decades.
One of the projects will be in Madrid, where the Chinese company WeRide will begin operating alongside Uber. The service will initially launch with onboard safety operators, a formula already successfully used in other countries to build user trust and ensure a gradual transition to fully autonomous driving.
London doesn't want to be left behind either. Initiatives have been announced there by Wayve, the British company specializing in artificial intelligence applied to driving, in addition to expansion plans by Waymo and Apollo Go, owned by the Chinese tech giant Baidu. The first services will also have human supervisors during the initial phase.
Meanwhile, Munich and other European cities are preparing similar projects driven by alliances between manufacturers, mobility platforms, and autonomous driving software developers.

The European Union itself seems to have understood that regulatory fragmentation was one of the main obstacles to the development of this industry. Therefore, several European countries have agreed to accelerate cross-border testing of autonomous vehicles and move towards a more standardized authorization system. The idea of creating a kind of "European testbed" for autonomous cars could greatly simplify the deployment of these technologies across the continent.
However, the road to widespread adoption is still long. Every incident involving an autonomous vehicle typically receives enormous media attention and quickly goes viral on social media. In contrast, the thousands of fatal accidents caused each year by human drivers barely generate any discussion. This difference in public perception remains one of the biggest challenges for the sector.
Even so, the trend seems difficult to stop. Artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and the constant improvement of driving systems are making autonomous vehicles increasingly safer and more efficient. It is likely that, in a few years, seeing a robotaxi driving around a European city will be as commonplace as ordering a car through a mobile app is today.
Growth forecasts, however, should be analyzed with caution. Some international organizations estimate that hundreds of thousands of autonomous taxis could be operational by 2035, while certain companies are even talking about figures in the millions. The reality could be considerably more modest.
It's important to remember that Waymo, currently considered the world leader in the sector, began its development in 2009 and is still seeking definitive economic viability. Over the years, numerous companies that promised to revolutionize autonomous mobility have disappeared without achieving their goals.
Therefore, although the future of autonomous taxis seems increasingly imminent, significant technological, regulatory, and economic challenges remain. What does seem certain is that between 2026 and 2027, Europeans will begin to live with this new form of transportation, taking the first steps toward increasingly automated urban mobility.
It will just be a matter of waiting a little longer.
