From what we see and read, there are two main trends in autonomous cars, each with a different priority. Waymo seeks the safety of passengers and pedestrians, and Tesla seeks the speed of implementation of this technology.

Tesla has been advertising "Full Self-Driving" for years and saying that its cars are autonomous when it is not true, and despite the fact that show that some drivers have been killed at the wheel for not controlling what is happening around them.

On the other hand, Waymo has been taking steps little by little and testing its autonomous cars in limited geographical areas, providing taxi services without driver in several North American cities.

Waymo is by far the company that has accumulated the most experience in all these years and has traveled more than 20 million miles, operating autonomously and collecting data from the experiences obtained, and they have had very few accidents.

On the other hand, Tesla has tens of thousands of cars in circulation and many of them with the Full Self-Driving program, and although they have had very serious accidents with at least 12 deaths, it also has a huge amount of information to analyze.

Waymo's priority is driving safety and it has equipped its cars with a multitude of sensors (lidar, radar, cameras, etc ...) to be able to visualize what is happening around the car and make it work without causing accidents.

Playing it safe is taking a long time and it's unclear when Waymo will be able to put a fully autonomous car on the market.

On the other hand, Tesla has prioritized the speed of implementation of the autonomous car at the lowest possible cost, so that its cars have fewer sensors (cameras and little else). And in a few years they have been able to put many cars into operation with his "autonomous" system (which in fact it is not) and I suppose they have assumed that they are going to court for the deaths that their cars cause.

The reality is that of the 5 defined self-driving levels, strictly speaking, Tesla's car is at Level 2, while Waymo's is at Level 4 self-driving.

There is an important difference between the two strategies. Waymo is very safe but it does not sell cars but it sells people transport services, and Tesla sells cars, and many thousands of them.

Waymo's security comes at a cost, and its cars are estimated to cost in the order of $ 200,000, although in recent times the sensors are decreasing in size and prices. Tesla for its part sells its cars for $ 70,000 with an additional $ 10,000 for the autonomous driving program, and it is true that it makes many more cars than Waymo.

The global situation of the automobile is that every year 1,300,000 people die in the world due to accidents and 94% of them are due to human error. Reducing that mortality by 90% would be a very important milestone, and that is what Mr. Musk (Tesla) advocates; but that should be done without misleading customers with false promises of self-driving.

The rest of the automotive companies are doing limited tests with their autonomous car models still on a small scale when compared to Waymo and Tesla.

The market suggests that “aids” for autonomous driving will be introduced in cars step by step. There are already a few testing models with autonomous driving in Level 2 and 3, but at the moment they are just tests.

What seems very clear is that all these technological improvements are going to significantly reduce accidents with cars. And that is more than positive.
