The unfortunate war in Ukraine has caused many countries (especially European ones) to look for alternatives to the gas and oil that came from Russia, and this has led to a significant increase in the consumption of coal and other fossil fuels to generate energy.
According to the Secretary General of the UN (Antonio Guterres) this is a "madness" in which we must not fall, because it puts the climate goals that already are difficult to achieve even more at risk.
When leaders get nervous, they can make hasty and unreasoned decisions, such as betting on continuing to extract coal from the mines as an alternative to Russian fuel supplies.
As difficult and hard as it may seem, the smartest decision should be to promote non-polluting alternative energies, and increase efforts in that direction. Although I also understand that the energy cannot be interrupted from one day to the next.
As painful as any war is, many have had their eyes opened not to depend so much on a single supplier (Russia) as is the case with some European countries led by Germany.
And what should not be done is to go from depending on one (Russia), to end up depending on another (USA, Saudi Arabia, or whoever). The only intelligent alternative is to minimize risks by varying the supply, consuming less, and at the same time promoting non-polluting energies with European suppliers. We have the technology and the means to do it.
The question that arises for me is: will anyone listen to Mr. Guterres?
