The practice of journalism is a vital profession in any democratic society. Journalists act as the eyes and ears of the public, seeking the truth and transmitting it objectively and truthfully. Without journalists to tell us the truth, we will not know what is really happening in the world, and we will live deceived.

However, in recent years, we have witnessed a worrying increase in the risks and dangers faced by journalists around the world. This increase in violence and intimidation against journalists poses serious threats to press freedom and, ultimately, democracy itself.

Last year, reports of the deaths of 99 journalists are a grim reminder of the dangers inherent in this profession. This number represents an alarming 44% increase compared to the previous year, and marks the highest number of deaths since 2015.

Behind these statistics are human stories, devastated families and communities that lose a valuable voice. Each of these journalists sacrificed their personal safety for the sake of truth and transparency, and their loss is a tragedy for both their loved ones and society at large.

The increase in violence against journalists can be attributed to a number of risk factors. In some cases, journalists are targets of attacks by extremist groups or organized crime that seek to silence the truth and protect their interests.

In other cases, authoritarian or dictatorial governments repress the independent press to maintain their control over the narrative and avoid accountability. Furthermore, the advent of social media and the digital age has created new challenges, as journalists receive online threats ranging from harassment, to defamation and intimidation.

Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society. Without courageous journalists to investigate, question and challenge the status quo, democracy is weakened and power goes unchecked. Journalists play a crucial role in providing accurate and verified information that allows citizens to make informed decisions and participate in the democratic process.

When journalists are silenced or coerced, it undermines the very foundation of democracy and opens the door to corruption, oppression and abuse of power.

In addition to physical risks, journalists also face economic and political pressures that can compromise their independence and objectivity.

The concentration of media in the hands of a few conglomerates and the erosion of traditional business models have led to a decline in the diversity and quality of journalistic coverage. In many cases, journalists are forced to self-censor or avoid sensitive topics for fear of retaliation or loss of employment.

In the face of this growing threat to freedom of press, it is imperative that the international community take concrete measures to protect journalists and ensure a safe and conducive environment for the practice of journalism.

Governments must fulfill their obligations under international law to protect freedom of expression and ensure the safety of journalists. This includes investigating and prosecuting those who commit acts of violence or intimidation against journalists, as well as creating protection and support mechanisms for those who are at risk.

Furthermore, it is essential that society as a whole recognizes the value of independent journalism and supports journalists in their work. This involves consuming media critically, promoting diversity and plurality of voices in the media, and defending the principles of transparency and accountability at all levels of society.

Ultimately, the future of democracy depends on a commitment to protecting and promoting press freedom around the world. Journalists are the guardians of truth and justice, and we must be united in our defense of their right to report without fear or favor. Only then can we build a world where truth prevails over lies and where the voice of each individual has the power to be heard.

Will we do it ?
