The approval of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Law by the European Union in April 2024 marks a historic milestone in the regulation of this disruptive technology. Considered the most comprehensive legislation on AI in the world, this law aims to establish a solid legal framework to ensure the responsible development and use of AI in Europe, while protecting the fundamental rights of citizens and promoting innovation.

Something important about this law is that it provides greater clarity and predictability, as it provides a clear and stable regulatory framework, which gives companies the confidence necessary to invest in the development of innovative AI technologies, and it gives citizens relative security.

And generally, the focus of the law is to protect people's rights and safety. AI systems that pose an unacceptable risk to the safety, health, fundamental rights or dignity of people are prohibited.

And companies are required to be transparent about their use of AI and be able to explain how their systems work, putting measures in place to prevent AI systems from discriminating against people or perpetuating existing biases.

The law comes into force in May 2024, and companies have three years to adapt to it, and it is expected that users will begin to see some results at the end of this year, 2024.

Companies that have the most powerful AI models (such as chatGPT and others) must carry out evaluations of their models and their risks in order to mitigate them, and report any incidents that occur in their system.

According to this law, EU citizens will be able to file complaints when they suspect that an AI system has harmed them, and must receive the necessary explanations in this regard.

The law prohibits the use of facial recognition in public places, but with the exception that law enforcement agencies can use them in cases of serious crimes, terrorism, etc.

I think it is an important step in the right direction, and although it will have some criticism, let's hope that European citizens are not in the absolute hands of the large technology corporations.

From now on, we have AI introduced in all areas of our lives. The minimum necessary is to have a law that protects us all a little.

The EU Artificial Intelligence Law is a crucial step in ensuring that AI is developed and used responsibly for the benefit of society. While there are challenges in its implementation and future adaptation, this law has the potential to position Europe as a leader in responsible AI innovation and in the protection of fundamental rights in the digital age.

We will see what the future holds for us.
