In a world where technology advances by leaps and bounds, it is not surprising that we find innovative solutions to the most everyday problems. One of them, which affects the planet and public health, is cigarette butt pollution.

It is estimated that around 4 trillion cigarette butts are thrown on the ground every year, polluting our environment with more than 200 toxic substances. These butts end up in rivers, beaches, parks and streets, affecting biodiversity, water quality and human health.

But innovation comes from the hand of  VERO  , a four-legged robot, designed at the Technological Institute of Genoa, which can become a crucial ally in the fight against cigarette butt pollution.

VERO (Vacuum.cleaner Equipped RObot), is not a very special robot. It is based on a standard Unitree platform, but what sets it apart is its ingenious cigarette butt collection system.

Its secret lies in the vacuum pump that is attached to its four legs, and is connected to tubes that suck up cigarette butts from the ground. This innovative solution allows the robot to overcome obstacles, access difficult areas and clean even on uneven terrain such as parks, beaches or areas with vegetation.

The operation of VERO is simple, intuitive and efficient. An operator simply tells it the area to be cleaned, and it takes care of planning the optimal route, avoiding obstacles and maximising cleaning efficiency. VERO, thanks to its artificial intelligence, analyses the terrain, identifies cigarette butts and vacuums them up autonomously.

Its tireless work capacity and performance make it an ideal tool for cleaning public spaces. In tests, it has managed to eliminate up to 90% of cigarette butts from the work area. Researchers are working to further improve its efficiency and accuracy in detecting and collecting cigarette butts.

This initiative shows us how technology can be an ally in the fight for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. This robot not only cleans cigarette butts, but also reminds us of the importance of individual and collective responsibility in caring for the planet.

It is important to note that the solution offered by VERO is not limited to cleaning cigarette butts. Its technology could be adapted to other types of waste, such as dry leaves, small harmful waste, or others.

.

In addition, its ability to operate on uneven terrain and its autonomy make it a versatile tool with great potential for cleaning public areas, parks and natural spaces.

As I said at the beginning, I like the idea, and it is another example of people's imagination. I just hope it is on the market as soon as possible.
