The arrival of Artificial Intelligence sparked an intense debate about which professions would disappear. For months, the focus was on the jobs that AI could replace. However, reality is proving that the change is much more complex. Today, we not only see that some tasks can be automated, but AI is also transforming the way companies organize work.

The emergence of AI agents has accelerated this trend. These systems can autonomously perform numerous administrative, programming, customer service, data analysis, and content creation tasks. As a result, many companies are redesigning their workforces following a simple formula: some work is done by employees, some by AI agents, and the rest is outsourced to freelancers.

This is where gig work comes into play, a model based on one-off or project-based collaborations. In some cases, it represents an opportunity for professionals seeking flexibility, but it can also become a way to reduce labor costs by replacing stable jobs with freelance relationships that lack the guarantees of an employment contract.

The result is clear. Many people work without paid vacations, sick leave, severance pay, and sometimes even minimal financial stability. These are professionals who must constantly compete for new projects while assuming all the risks of their work.

Until a few years ago, this phenomenon was mainly associated with delivery drivers or drivers for digital platforms like Uber. However, AI has brought this model to much more highly skilled sectors. Today, we find writers, programmers, designers, translators, consultants, lawyers, and even healthcare professionals working under similar arrangements.

The data shows the magnitude of the change. Several studies by Upwork estimate that around 60 million Americans performed some type of freelance work in 2025, while more recent research indicates that this number is expected to exceed 80 million in a couple of years. At the same time, the demand for professionals capable of working alongside AI tools continues to grow rapidly. This indicates that AI doesn't always eliminate jobs, but it does profoundly modify their organization and the conditions under which they are performed.

There is also another worrying trend. In the United States, 17 states have already adapted their legislation to facilitate temporary hiring platforms in sectors as sensitive as nursing, using "gig nursing platforms." The wave is spreading, and critics warn that this model can reduce labor rights and increase instability, even in professions essential to society.

The underlying issue is not technological, but social. Do we want to build an economy where services become increasingly cheaper at the expense of increasingly precarious workers? It is an uncomfortable but essential question.

Artificial Intelligence, in and by itself, does not destroy labor rights. It is an extraordinary tool that can increase productivity, improve the quality of work, and free people from repetitive tasks. The real problem arises when it is used solely to maximize profits while minimizing the human cost.

This isn't about stifling innovation. That would be a huge mistake. AI represents one of the greatest technological advances in our history and can generate enormous benefits for all of society. The challenge lies in ensuring that this progress is accompanied by modern legislation, social protections, and new forms of collective bargaining that prevent the emergence of a new class of permanently replaceable workers.

Because the future of employment won't depend solely on Artificial Intelligence. It will depend, above all, on the decisions we make as a society. Technology is never to blame for how we choose to use it. That responsibility remains exclusively ours.
