Plug-in hybrids pollute far more than their official figures indicate. For years, we have heard that the plug-in hybrid was a sort of perfect middle-ground solution: electric power for daily commutes and a combustion engine for long-distance trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On paper, their fuel consumption and emissions figures look remarkably good. The problem is that the reality of driving on the road is quite different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A recent study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT)\u2014based on data from approximately 920,000 plug-in hybrids registered in Europe between 2021 and 2023\u2014has found a huge discrepancy between official and real-world emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For vehicles registered in 2023, actual CO\u2082 emissions were, on average, 4.6 times higher than the official figures. This is a remarkably significant difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Where does the problem lie? The explanation is seemingly simple: plug-in hybrids are driven in electric mode less often than the type-approval system assumes. The European procedure uses a so-called \"utility factor\" to estimate the percentage of kilometers driven primarily on electricity. The issue is that this estimate turns out to be overly optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, the ICCT notes that while the system might assume electric usage close to 80% for certain vehicles, actual data pointed to a much lower proportion. This gives rise to an interesting paradox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Plug-in hybrid batteries have increased in capacity, allowing for more kilometers to be covered without using gasoline or diesel. Yet, the proportion of kilometers actually driven in electric mode has decreased. Consequently, real-world emissions have not evolved as one might expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are we facing another \"Dieselgate\"? Here, it is important to be very precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ICCT was precisely one of the organizations whose work helped expose the scandal known as Dieselgate in 2015. Its research revealed huge discrepancies between the emissions of certain diesel vehicles in laboratory settings and under real-world driving conditions. This subsequently led to official investigations and confirmation that illegal devices were being used in Volkswagen vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the case of plug-in hybrids is different. The current study does not show that manufacturers are using devices to deliberately cheat on tests. Instead, it highlights that the calculation method used for their type-approval significantly overestimates actual electric driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this has consequences. A car may officially appear to be a very low-emission vehicle yet emit far more CO\u2082 on the road than expected. This serves as a warning for Europe. The European Commission has already acknowledged the issue and began modifying the \"utility factor\" calculation for 2025, with another adjustment planned for 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the underlying issue is far more significant. If we truly want to reduce transport emissions, official figures must align as closely as possible with real-world driving conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Plug-in hybrids can be useful when charged regularly and genuinely driven in electric mode. However, consistently presenting them as a near-electric alternative can create an overly optimistic picture of their environmental impact. That is a mistake\u2014and, in part, a deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, as Europe continues to refine its regulations, Chinese manufacturers are making rapid strides in electric cars, batteries, and charging systems. Perhaps the lesson is simple: the transition to electric vehicles should not be delayed by figures that fail to accurately reflect reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After all, in an industry changing so rapidly, stalling a technological transformation might feel comfortable for a few years. But it is merely a waste of time\u2014like playing a game of solitaire where you fool yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that comes at a very high price later on\u2014especially for the auto workers who are going to lose their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That's how unfair life is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
