Drones have become a major innovation in modern warfare. They are relatively inexpensive, quick to deploy, and capable of carrying out missions that previously required far costlier assets. However, they have a significant weakness: radio communication.

A conventional drone receives commands from its operator via radio signals and, in many cases, transmits camera footage back through the same channel. The problem is that the enemy can use electronic warfare systems to jam these communications, spoof the navigation system, or prevent the operator from controlling the aircraft.

It is an age-old cat-and-mouse game. For decades, military forces have developed systems to transmit information alongside countermeasures designed to block or alter it. Every technological advance triggers a new response.

The same dynamic is playing out with drones. The solution gaining prominence in the war in Ukraine is surprisingly simple—and has been used before: replacing radio communication with a fiber-optic cable.

The principle is easy to understand. The drone carries a small spool of fiber-optic cable and unspools it while in flight. Operator commands and camera footage travel along this cable.

Since the link does not rely on the radio spectrum, conventional electromagnetic interference cannot jam it. This gives these drones a crucial advantage in environments where electronic warfare is particularly intense.

However, this solution comes at a cost. The drone must carry the spool and cable, in addition to the batteries and payload required for the mission. All that weight reduces performance and flight range. Naturally, the length of the cable also limits the maximum operating distance.

By 2025, models featuring spools of 10, 15, 20, and even 25 kilometers were already in existence. In 2026, systems with ranges exceeding 30 kilometers were authorized, while various military and industrial developments are pushing these distances even further.

Furthermore, the cable introduces other limitations: it can snag on obstacles, complicates certain movements, and necessitates a physical connection between the drone and its control station.

Consequently, fiber optics will not necessarily replace conventional drones. Each system has its own advantages and drawbacks. For certain missions, radio will remain preferable, whereas in others, resistance to electronic warfare will make fiber optics a particularly attractive option.

And the story does not end there. New technologies to detect and neutralize these drones are already under development, while manufacturers strive for greater range, reduced weight, and more autonomous navigation systems.

All signs point to drones being here to stay on the battlefield. And, just as with missiles, aircraft, or other military vehicles, we will likely see drones employing various guidance technologies, selected based on the specific mission at hand.

Electronic warfare has found an answer in fiber optics. And, as is always the case with military technology, that answer is already prompting a new counter-response.

That is how technology evolves.
