<\/figure>\n\n\n\nWe're already seeing this trend in smartphones and computers. But doing all that inside a pair of glasses or a ring is still much more complicated. Perhaps the smartphone won't disappear; it will simply change form. That's why I envision a different scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of each device having to do everything, we could have a kind of \"personal box\" that accompanies us at all times. It wouldn't necessarily have to look like a phone. It might not even have a screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It would be a small personal computer with a relatively large battery, significant processing power, and artificial intelligence capable of learning our preferences, remembering our conversations, and managing a good part of our digital life, while maintaining a certain level of data privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Glasses, watches, headphones, or any other device would simply be interfaces connected to that box. The power would be in your pocket. Interaction, everywhere. And that changes things considerably. The real battle will be for control of that box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Herein lies the true scope of the matter. Carrying around a device that knows our habits, our conversations, our documents, our relationships, and a good part of our lives would be extraordinarily powerful. It would also be a gigantic business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, hundreds of millions of smartphones are sold every year. Although the market is no longer growing as it did a decade ago, it remains enormous and generates unimaginable sums of money. That's why it's hard to imagine that major manufacturers will calmly watch this business disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apple, Google, OpenAI, Meta, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and many other companies are developing different components of this future: specialized processors, local artificial intelligence, glasses, assistants, operating systems, and new forms of interaction. And it's very likely that other companies are working on products we don't even know about yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because artificial intelligence changes everything. The great revolution isn't really about removing the screen from the phone. It's more about changing our relationship with computing. Until now, we've had to learn how to use machines: opening applications, navigating menus, typing instructions, and pressing buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With AI, something different happens. We can start explaining what we want and let the machine decide how to achieve it. This allows us to imagine a future where the personal mobile device is less visible, but much more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps we'll wear glasses. Perhaps a watch. Perhaps an earpiece. Or perhaps something completely different that doesn't yet exist. But behind all of them could be the same personal intelligence, always available and increasingly capable of acting on our behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is the smartphone dead? Not so fast. It's possible that in a few years we'll look at a current smartphone and find it as limited as a twenty-year-old computer seems to us today. But that doesn't necessarily mean the device we carry with us will disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The phone as an object may disappear, but its function will remain. And perhaps we won't even need to call it a smartphone. We could end up simply talking about our personal mobile device: a small machine with enormous computing power, connected to everything we carry and to the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The screen could disappear. The smartphone, as we know it, perhaps will too. But the idea of carrying our digital lives with us probably still has many years to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The real battle won't be about manufacturing the next phone. It will be about making that little box the center of our digital lives. And when we discover who manages to control it, we'll probably also know who has won the next great technological battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
