Just open any social network to see it: privacy, ours and especially that of others, matters less and less. And the most recent and revealing example comes in the form of a fashion accessory: smart glasses. The accessory that records without you noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone takes out their phone to record you, you perceive it almost instantly. The gesture is obvious. But with smart glasses, that alarm bell disappears. They have a camera, microphone, and speakers integrated into a frame that looks completely conventional, making them a recording tool practically invisible to the person on the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta leads this market with its Ray-Ban Meta models, with more than 9 million pairs of camera glasses circulating worldwide. And with this expansion have come problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent months, cases of people being recorded without their consent and then exposed on social media have multiplied, sometimes with millions of views. The reaction has been swift: restaurants, private clubs, and many pubs. etc\u2026 have banned or restricted the use of these glasses to protect the privacy of customers and employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta itself has reacted. In addition to the LED that indicates when the camera is active, in July 2026 the company released a mandatory firmware update that blocks the camera if the indicator is physically tampered with, and has taken legal action against those who sell tricks to disable it. Instagram, for its part, has announced that it will remove content showing people being harassed using smart glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is that, no matter how much software is adjusted, that discreet LED goes completely unnoticed at two meters and with background noise. Technology tries to set limits, but there are always those who find a way around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a problem of rights\u2026 but above all, of education. The interesting thing is not only the legal debate; in France, a survey revealed that 67% of citizens see these glasses as a risk to privacy, and the German data protection agency has already warned of possible legal infringements. What's most revealing is what lies behind it: too many people prioritize their own interests or entertainment over the right of others not to be recorded or exposed\u2014in other words, their privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact is, our rights end precisely where the rights of others begin. This seems obvious, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to internalize. We live in a culture that insists heavily on \"my rights\" and very little on respect for others, and this imbalance has consequences: we become more unsociable, more distrustful, more willing to look the other way when someone crosses the line of another's privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No firmware update will solve this on its own. Technology can create obstacles, but true change lies in educating for respect, not just in demanding it. Because a society that only defends its own rights, without protecting the rights of others, is a society that erodes from within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
