This is precisely why Airbus's commitment is so significant. Its industrial capacity, experience, and available technical resources can accelerate progress that other companies, on their own, would have more difficulty achieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hydrogen offers very interesting advantages. Per unit of weight, it stores much more energy than current batteries, and when used in a fuel cell, it only generates water vapor during flight. On paper, it seems like an ideal solution. But the reality is considerably more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its storage requires extremely low temperatures, close to -253\u00b0C, as well as specially designed cryogenic tanks to withstand these conditions. All this equipment increases the weight and occupies much more volume than conventional fuel, two particularly critical factors for any aircraft. Added to this is the need to develop a massive airport infrastructure to produce, transport, store, and supply hydrogen safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several years ago, the aviation industry announced its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. However, even officials from international organizations like IATA have acknowledged that meeting this timeline will be extremely difficult without accelerating investment, infrastructure development, and technological advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, manufacturers continue to deliver thousands of kerosene-powered aircraft that will remain operational for more than three decades. And forecasts indicate that air traffic will continue to grow in the coming years, further increasing the pressure on the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the time has come for policymakers to accompany technological innovation with more decisive measures. If there were greater regulatory pressure to limit emissions from the most polluting flights, research efforts would likely grow at the same rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because the reality is clear. Every summer we experience a string of heat waves, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and climate change has ceased to be a future threat and has become a present-day problem. Technology advances, but so does time. Initiatives like Airbus's offer a glimmer of hope, although there is still a long way to go before we can speak of truly sustainable aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in the meantime, we continue to travel and pollute as if nothing were happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
